Farley S. Nobre (Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Sc.) is Professor at the School of Management of The Federal University of Parana, in Curitiba-PR, Brazil. His research interests include organizations, knowledge management systems, innovation and sustainability. He received his Ph.D. at The University of Birmingham (UK) with thesis On Cognitive Machines in Organizations, and he participated in the ARMMS project. He was Guest Researcher with the Institute of Organization Theory and the Artificial Intelligence Research Group of the Humboldt University of Berlin, and he participated in the Socionics project. With the multinational NEC he worked in the areas of software process improvement. He received the 1998 NEC Industrial Honor Prize for his contributions in the areas of innovation and quality. Dr. Nobre has authored international books, chapters and papers in journals and conferences worldwide. He is first author of “(Nobre, Tobias & Walker, 2009) Organizational and Technological Implications of Cognitive Machines: Designing Future Information Management Systems. IGI Global, USA.” He is member of SERVAS (a voluntary worldwide institution in support of peace and multi-cultural integration).

His Ph.D. thesis “On Cognitive Machines in Organizations” was concerned with the areas of organizational learning and cognition, information systems and the implications of cognitive machines for organizations. In UK, 2001, he participated in the ARMMS FP7 Project (Agile Reconfigurable Manufacturing Machinery Systems).

2002-2003: Guest researcher with the Artificial Intelligence Research Group and the Institute of Organization Theory of the Humboldt-University of Berlin. In Berlin, he presented seminars, completed courses on organizations, behavioural economics and artificial intelligence, and participated in the SOCIONICS – which is the designation of an interdisciplinary research project supported by the German Research Foundation whose main areas of investigation involve the combination of Social and Computer Sciences.

1997-2000: Software Project Engineer with NEC. He worked in the areas of: development of norms and policies on organizational learning processes; implementation of the Capability Maturity Model (SEI-CMM); research on software process improvement models with publications in worldwide events; and development of software for telecommunications management networks. He received from NEC in Brazil the 1998 Industrial Honor Prize in the areas Productivity and Quality which included developments of expert systems for evaluation of customer satisfaction and process productivity.

2000: Completion of Advanced Mathematics for Engineers provided by the R&D Center of NEC in Brazil.

1998 & 2000: Lecturer in software engineering, information systems and control in the Universities of USJT and UNICSUL, both located in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

1994-1997: M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering by The State University of Campinas, Brazil, (UNICAMP), with thesis about “design and analysis of fuzzy systems”.

1989-1993: B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of the Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, (PUC-MG, 1989-1993).
